Description of the Experience
Children should be encouraged to become real chemists and act like them: make predictions and test them, do experiments or make observations. Simple experiments speak volumes and most of the times are more important than pages of abstract theory in terms of raising students’ motivation to learn chemistry. One of the simplest experiments which has been very popular with my students is the one which tests the pH of various water samples, such as tap water (different sources- kitchen or bathroom), bottled water, pond water or fish tank water. We used a kit capable of testing pH and various water samples. We filled test vial to appropriate level with water sample. Then we added a few drops of pH solution to test vial. I asked my students to observe any changes and compare the color of the water sample to the test kit color standards.
We talked about the pH, which is a measure of the acidity or alkalinity of a solution. I told them that pH is important to water quality; changes in the level of pH bring about unpleasant consequences and extreme pH values are even hazardous to plants and wildlife. In a lake or pond, the pH of the water is affected by many factors; pollution from nearby communities and industries is one of them.

There is a lot of talk nowadays especially on TV about being healthy and health-conscious. The quality of the water we drink is one of the topics so I tried to help my students understand why the quality of water is so important to our health.

I think this kind of experience is very important to make chemistry attractive and present in the students’ everyday life.
I also practice it with classes of fifteen/sixteen year old pupils, not older, and they always have fun and show interest.
Anyway, I find that it is much more different to me to involve them in the theoretical and mathematical approaches. Actually, I would like to know how you try to explain acid/base theories, weak and strong acids and bases and so on.

Dissemination Seminar in Florence

31 October 2015 The seminar has been held in ITIS “A. Meucci” one of the schools involved within Goerudio project activities. Its main aim was to promote the results of the project toward a broad sample of stakeholders even overcrossing the number of people directly involved in the production of project outcomes. This purpose has been totally achieved especially thanks to the participation of students and teachers coming from different schools or from other classes instead of those ones directly involved within the project activities.
