Developing Scientific Knowledge and Language Competences through the Goerudio Project

Title of the magazine:
Proceedings of the International Conference ICT For Language Learning
ISBN code (978-88-6292-660-7), published by Libreriauniversitaria.it.

Date of publication: 2015

The article is based on the Goerudio project (543223-LLP-1-2013-1-LV-KA4- KA4MP), as it is being implemented by EuroEd Foundation Iasi, Romania. The project has analysed challenges that European educational systems are facing at present: students’ lack of motivation when studying scientific related topics and school teachers’ inability to find innovative teaching methods in order to stimulate students’ interest in science. The project has created a learning community of science teachers and students who have discussed and shared knowledge and experiences in order to make scientific education more involving and appealing. The community has been involved in the development of teaching resources for scientific subjects. Its resulting products- educational models- have been further used in a CLIL programme, where students have developed not only their knowledge and understanding of the world but also their language competences. The resources created through the Goerudio project, the methods and online activities and exercises used have enabled students to use language purposefully. The article analyses the way the programme has helped students to process information, negotiate meaning, and share knowledge even when their level of the target language varies

Goerudio models or how to motivate students to love science

Title of the magazine:
The Fifth Edition of the International Conference “New Perspectives in Science Education”, Florence, Italy
http://conference.pixel-online.net/NPSE/index.php

Date of publication: 03.2016

The article is a study of the main outputs created within the Goerudio project (543223-LLP-1-2013-1-LV-KA4- KA4MP), which has been implemented in seven European countries, as part of a European funded project in the framework of the Lifelong Learning Programme – Transversal Programme – Key Activity 4 Multilateral Project. The article focuses on the Goerudio educational models, which have been developed through the joint efforts of the learning community of science teachers and students set up during the project lifetime. The Goerudio educational models are metaphors, associations or analogies students are guided to make between complex scientific concepts and common everyday issues. They connect students’ familiar and concrete experience with the unknown and abstract information provided by scientific subjects. The models are supported by drawings, pictures or films, which make them even more memorable and accessible. The study examines the steps and activities leading to the creation of the models, as as well their role in enhancing students’ motivation to learn science. Suggestions as to how to create and use the Goerudio models are also given through the presentation of the best Goerudio models devised. The article concludes with teachers’ feedback: the Goerudio educational models are tools which not only enable learners to get a better understanding of the scientific subjects but also stimulate their interest in science.
Goerudio Method And Tool To Achieve Necessary Level Of Comprehension

Title of the magazine:
Proceedings of the International Scientific Congress - Life Sciences, A Challenge for the Future
Lucrări Ştiinţifice – vol. 57/2014, seria Agronomie
S3_PL_15

Date of publication: 23rd - 25th of October, 2014

Abstract:
The project rationale relies on the shared identification by the project partners, of common challenges that the educational and training systems of their countries and of Europe in general, are facing and that need a common effort in order to be answered to:
- the lack of motivation of secondary and vocational education students in studying scientific related topics, and the related insufficient results that they achieve during their school curricula
- the lack of capacity of teachers and trainers in updating their teaching methods in order to promote the interest of their students toward scientific issues
The motivation of these problems are obviously complex and invest many different factors, but the project partners believe that the most important one is related to the fact that too often students approach to scientific issues is too passive, based on memorising rather than understanding.
Goerudio is a learning methodology that is based on user involvement in its application and subject matter development. This program enables the user to explain complex formulas, physics laws and concepts presented by teachers with simple and familiar examples that are readily understood. The key difference between Goerudio and similar tools is that it facilitates learning rather than teaching and does not conflict with traditional teaching methods. Goerudio provides an internet based framework through which the user pool (students) refines the concepts and models in support of any given subject. Through active involvement in the process and the use of familiar examples, the learners rapidly gain a better understanding of the underlying principles or processes. Interaction and communication among the users helps to develop a common understanding of the concepts and their relationships to relevant laws of science and mathematics.
Goerudio: an innovative solution to enhance motivation to teach and learn science

Title of the magazine: Proceedings of the sixth edition of The Future of Education Conference, organized by Pixel in Florence, Italy

Date of publication: 2014

Abstract
The article is a study based on an innovative method which is being applied by EuroEd Foundation Iasi Romania, within the Goerudio European project. The project encourages both teachers of science and their students across Europe to work together in order to identify and share innovative practices to make science more appealing to students. The e-learning project platform also enables teachers to cope with the major challenges they face as a result of the increasing speed of the development of scientific knowledge. By exploring the online materials developed as part of other projects on the promotion of scientific knowledge and of innovative practices and methods aiming at learner-centeredness, teachers and trainers update their teaching methods in order to enhance the interest of their students towards science. Exchanges of ideas at a European level help teachers make students reconsider the role sciences should play in their life: as part of their future personal development rather than a set of information to be memorised for school.
The project also encourages the development of a strong learning community where students and teachers have the opportunity to discuss and find solutions in order to stimulate science learning. They work together to collect, review and share experiences related to the most effective and interactive approaches to the teaching and learning of scientific issues.

Dissemination Seminar in Florence

31 October 2015 The seminar has been held in ITIS “A. Meucci” one of the schools involved within Goerudio project activities. Its main aim was to promote the results of the project toward a broad sample of stakeholders even overcrossing the number of people directly involved in the production of project outcomes. This purpose has been totally achieved especially thanks to the participation of students and teachers coming from different schools or from other classes instead of those ones directly involved within the project activities.
