Description of the Experience
The experiment aims to motivate students learning science. We use the colour change of phenolphthalein indicator in acid and basic medium. In acidic solution is colourless and resembles the water, whereas in basic medium the colour is purple and resembles wine.
Before students enter the lab material the following material is prepared:
• In beaker 1 put a few mL of phenolphthalein (little enough that students do not appreciate).
• In beaker 2 we add a drop of the NaOH solution.
• In the beaker 3 we add two drops of HCl.
• In beaker 4 we add three drops of NaOH.
• In beaker 5 we add four drops of HCl.
NOTE: The concentration of the HCl and NaOH solutions must be similar.
In the presence of students proceed as follows (each teacher can act and add theatricality):
- In beaker 1, water is added and noting seems to happen, the water is colourless.
- Magic words are pronounced and the contents of beaker 1 is added to beaker 2, observing that this vessel immediately acquire a purplish red colour (wine).
- Then the contents of the beaker 2 is poured into the beaker 3 and observe as the solution loses its colour again (it has been turned back into water).
- We proceed in the same way with beaker 4 (back to transform it into wine) and the beaker 5 (get back to the initial water).

Once captured the attention of the students the teacher can explain the theoretical concepts of acid-base indicators.

Dissemination Seminar in Florence

31 October 2015 The seminar has been held in ITIS “A. Meucci” one of the schools involved within Goerudio project activities. Its main aim was to promote the results of the project toward a broad sample of stakeholders even overcrossing the number of people directly involved in the production of project outcomes. This purpose has been totally achieved especially thanks to the participation of students and teachers coming from different schools or from other classes instead of those ones directly involved within the project activities.
