Description of the Experience
Markovnikov’s rule
The molecule of propene is presented by 9 students where every student is playing the role of one of the atoms. In organic compounds the carbon is always 4-valent so it could be used the 4 limbs of the students as the free four possible links. The children who will play the role of the hydrogen atom will use just one of their arms and the other arm the put behind their back.
According to Markovnikov’s rule when asymmetric unsaturated hydrocarbon interacts with polar molecule (HBr) the hydrogen from the polar molecule bonds with the carbon atom from the molecule of the unsaturated hydrocarbon, which participates in the double bond and is connected with more hydrogen atoms and the other atom (Br) connects with the carbon from the double bond which is connected with less hydrogen atoms. The double bond is reduced – becomes single and the carbon retains its 4-valency.
The double bond is presented by the one arm and one leg between two students. With the free leg and arm every student touches (make a bond) other students. One of the students is last and he/she will get another two students who present the hydrogen atoms. The student in the middle will bond with a student (third carbon atom) and another three students (hydrogen atoms). The Br molecule is presented by boy and girl where the girl is Br-atom and the boy is H-atom. During the interaction the boy goes where there are more H-atoms and the girl goes to the atom with the double bond and they take hands which reviews the new formed covalent bonds and the breaking of one of the bonds between the carbon atoms from the propene molecule. Everyone see that the girl goes in the middle and this picture is remembered.

Dissemination Seminar in Florence

31 October 2015 The seminar has been held in ITIS “A. Meucci” one of the schools involved within Goerudio project activities. Its main aim was to promote the results of the project toward a broad sample of stakeholders even overcrossing the number of people directly involved in the production of project outcomes. This purpose has been totally achieved especially thanks to the participation of students and teachers coming from different schools or from other classes instead of those ones directly involved within the project activities.
