Description of the Experience
Objective: Teaching of the modification variability theme, statistics.
Description: Students measure their height and in groups they measure the length of 20 leaves from one tree, after that they make statistical charts.
Skills and key competencies:
• Basic knowledge of modification variability
• Basic skills in statistics
• Communication in mother tongue
• Communication in foreign languages (the lesson can easily be translated)
• Mathematical competence and basic competences in science and technology
• Competencies for working with digital technology
• Ability to learn alone

Performance: in this lesson it is better students to work in groups of two or three people.

Materials:
• Leaves of a tree
• Sheets of paper
• Ruler
• Pens
• Laptop (optional)
• Multimedia projector (optional)
• Interactive board (optional)

Stages:
Step 1: Students observe a brief presentation that introduces key terms and provides general information about modification variability.
Step 2: The task is to define the limits of the height of the students. They themselves measure their height, fill the table with the results and make a chart. Students must indicate the lowest and the highest value and find the average height of the group. The teacher helps and guides the students.
Question for the discussion: What are the factors that affect the height of a man?
Step 3: In this stage of the work students can work in groups of 2 or 3 people or alone. Each group collects 20 sheets from one and the same tree and measures the length of each leaf. The results are entered in table and it is drawn a chart. Students must find the lowest and the highest value and calculate the average length of the leaves.
Question for discussion: What are the factors that affect the length of the leaves?
Additional task: students can measure the width of the leaves.

It is a simple experience but it is undoubtedly that there is a lot to learn from it. If the instructions are clear and it is well-organized it will stick in students' mind for ever and they will look at it as a model to follow for other experiments.

Dissemination Seminar in Florence

31 October 2015 The seminar has been held in ITIS “A. Meucci” one of the schools involved within Goerudio project activities. Its main aim was to promote the results of the project toward a broad sample of stakeholders even overcrossing the number of people directly involved in the production of project outcomes. This purpose has been totally achieved especially thanks to the participation of students and teachers coming from different schools or from other classes instead of those ones directly involved within the project activities.
